From a nest to a Box

a story by: Meredith Toy

Could you imagine, How it would feel to be taken away from your family as a child? By something alot bigger than you and alot more powerful, something with the ability to rip you to shreads, If it wanted to! Well this is how it would feel to be a baby parrot, if you were caught that is...... Not by hand, yet.

For now you are a baby African Grey Parrot, who has just learnt how to fly! So here you are flying along back to your nest. Your mother has come back with food for you and your sister. You have been flying for a while now and decide you are going to land on a branch, a little lower then the one your sister is on. So you land to see if she might drop her food for you to catch and take back up to your nest. And of course, your sister being young and having a temper, throws the food down. You catch it! you look up to your mother who is sitting by your sister in the nest, she calls you up to eat. So you spread your wings and take off... But wait! You look down to your claws. Something is not right.... It appears your feet are stuck to the branch! You start to panic and try to pull your legs loose! Its no use, other birds hear you screaming and gather around to watch. Your mother swoops down and trys to help you...... It has been around 2 hours now and your mother has left you. But you cant blame her, She has herself and a new baby to look after. It starts to get dark, you are starving and extremly thirsty. You close your eyes, hoping it is only a bad dream...... Its midnight now. You can no longer feel your feet.. You are woken by the sound of whispers and a blindingly bright light. You wonder, Is this it? My jouney cant be over, why it has only just begun! But if this is it... I am ready. You close your eyes hoping death will be quick and easy...... Something grabs your neck and something else grabs your feet. Its a quick minute of pain and.... Your free! You wiggle your toes and feeling starts to come back! Its a miracle! Thanks for saving me! You wiggle a little as to say thanks, but you can let me go now. The grip only gets tighter. Next thing you know, you are being hung by your tail. A huge being walks up to you with a blade?  You start to question. They grab your wings and start to cut into them. You squeal for a moment, then they shove you into a small wooden box. You are scared and glance at your wings.... The ends have been cut off. You try to fly but, you only fall. What, why cant a fly? I still have wings! Have I forgotten how? The answer little Grey, is no.... They have clipped your wings and until they grow back, you will not be able to fly.... You hear more screams coming from the forest... They come back with alot of birds. They throw them all down on you and you gasp for air.... At the next stop, The weight only gets heavier. One bird falls on your neck, you can hardly breathe. You are now at the bottem of the box.... The crate is finally opened and dumped out on the floor. Many birds jump around franticly.... But you lay life less..... For you have suffercated...

** This is a true story.... But 75% of the birds in the crates die from suffercation**
